From a study by Amanda Sue Lawless 2008. Oyster Production vs Benthic Production Loss
Reviewing the results, Reef Balls show more production of oysters with less loss of benthic production. As you can see in this graph, Oyster Shell covered more area than the Reef Ball. Therefore, when looking at the benthic loss of production, Reef Balls have has less impact. With equal loss of benthic production it is projected that Reef Balls would actually have the larges production of oysters. One of the things I would attribute that to is the relief, of the Reef Ball provides much more surface area for oysters as well as other organisms. – Jim McFarlane.
